Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity

FII and DII Both Buying

FII and DII Both Buying is a Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 2 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs — mutual funds, insurance companies, LIC) operate with completely different analytical frameworks, time horizons, and risk tolerances. FIIs bring global macro perspective and top-down sector allocation; DIIs bring domestic fundamental research and bottom-up conviction. When both independently increase their stakes in the same company in the same quarter, it means two adversarial analytical communities — who usually disagree on India's macro outlook — have reached the same bullish conclusion on this specific stock. That convergence is a substantially more reliable signal than either FII or DII buying in isolation.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Institutional Convergence

  • FII Holding Change QoQ > 0
  • DII Holding Change QoQ > 0

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore

What each figure means

FII Holding Change (QoQ, %)

The change in FII holding percentage compared to the prior quarter. Positive means foreign institutions net-bought this stock.

Both this and the DII change must be positive simultaneously to qualify for this screener. FII buying alone doesn't meet the threshold — the convergence with DII is the signal.

High is better

DII Holding Change (QoQ, %)

The change in DII holding percentage compared to the prior quarter. Positive means domestic mutual funds, insurance companies, and pension funds net-bought this stock.

DII buying often reflects domestic mutual fund inflows rotating into quality names. When DII buys alongside FII, it is often driven by independent fundamental research rather than index-rebalancing.

High is better

Combined FII + DII Holding (%)

Total institutional ownership as a percentage of equity: FII% + DII%. A higher combined number means the stock is widely institutionally owned.
