Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity

Promoter >70% and FII >3.5% (Ownership Quality)

Promoter >70% and FII >3.5% (Ownership Quality) is a Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 2 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

Strong promoter holding signals that the founding family or controlling group has retained deep skin-in-the-game and has not diversified away from the business they built. When this is combined with meaningful FII ownership, it adds a layer of independent international validation — foreign institutional investors have typically conducted their own due diligence and are investing capital, not just rubber-stamping a story. The combination of >70% promoter holding and >3.5% FII holding is deliberately rare: at very high promoter stakes, the available float is limited and FII entry is structurally constrained, making this combination genuinely selective. Unlike our change-based screens (promoters_buying, fii_buying), this is a static ownership quality filter — it rewards businesses that have sustained both high promoter conviction and institutional credibility over time.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Promoter Conviction

  • Promoter Holding > 70

Institutional Validation

  • FII Holding > 3.5

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore

What each figure means

Promoter Holding %

Promoter and promoter group shareholding as a percentage of total paid-up equity, sourced from the FinEdge shareholding pattern endpoint for the latest reported quarter.

High is better

FII Holding %

FII shareholding as a percentage of total paid-up equity shares in the most recently reported quarter, sourced from the FinEdge shareholding pattern endpoint.

The qualifier threshold is >3.5%, chosen to represent a meaningful FII presence rather than a token allocation. Given that high promoter stakes compress the available public float, an FII holding of >3.5% in such companies represents a proportionally larger commitment from foreign institutions. This is not a dominant FII signal — it is a validation signal.
