Rising Promoter Pledge — Risk Monitor

Rising Promoter Pledge — Risk Monitor is a Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 4 conditions computed from nightly data, with no extra exclusions. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

When a promoter pledges shares as collateral for a personal or company loan, they create a hidden risk in the stock. If the share price falls below the lender's margin call threshold, the promoter may be forced to sell pledged shares into the market — creating supply pressure that drives the price down further, triggering more margin calls, in a vicious cycle. This screener is a risk monitor, not a buy screen: it surfaces companies where pledged shareholding as a percentage of total equity is rising, creating potential for forced-selling events. Understanding this risk is as important as finding opportunities.

What each figure means

Pledged Shares (% of Total Equity)

The percentage of total company equity pledged by promoters as collateral. Note: this is as a percentage of total equity, not promoter holding. 10% pledged means the promoter has pledged shares representing 10% of the company's total shares outstanding.

Low is better

Pledge Change Over 4 Quarters (%)

Change in pledged shareholding percentage comparing the most recent quarter to four quarters ago. A positive number means pledging has increased over the past year.

A rising pledge over multiple quarters signals increasing financial pressure on the promoter. Even if the absolute level seems low, an upward trend is a leading indicator of potential forced selling. This is the key metric for this risk screener.

Low is better

Promoter Holding (%)

Total promoter holding. Higher promoter holding with high pledging means more shares are at risk of forced selling in a downturn.

High is better
