All-Time High Breakout

All-Time High Breakout is a Technical & Price Action screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 1 condition computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

When a stock sets a new all-time high closing price, every single person who has ever owned the stock is in profit. There are no trapped sellers — no prior buyers looking to exit at breakeven and creating selling pressure. This creates an unusually clean demand-supply picture where the path of least resistance is upward. Studies of long-term market data consistently show that stocks at all-time highs tend to continue higher rather than reverse — the counterintuitive 'buy strength' insight behind momentum investing. The all-time high breakout is a rarer and stronger signal than the 52-week high breakout, because it requires a longer base and more sustained demand to achieve.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Maximum Momentum

  • Close Price ≥ All-Time High

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore
Passes the screen

Ranked by Close Price − All-Time High, highest first.

What each figure means

Current Price vs All-Time High (%)

The percentage by which the current price exceeds or falls short of the all-time closing high across the full 8-year OHLCV history. Zero means the stock is exactly at its all-time high. Positive means it has exceeded the prior record.

High is better

Volume Ratio (Current vs 30-Day Average)

Current volume relative to 30-day average. An ATH breakout with significantly above-average volume confirms institutional participation.

A quiet-volume ATH breakout on low trading days is susceptible to reversal. A high-volume ATH breakout — especially in a broad market uptrend — is one of the highest-quality continuation setups in technical analysis.

Evidence

What the harness measured

No edge detected

We could not tell this screen's picks apart from the stocks it left out. That is an absence of evidence, not a finding that the screen is wrong; it is still a valid way to narrow a list by your own rules.

AI-generated plain-language explanation

Each month over the 64 months we measured, we checked whether the stocks this screen picked did better over the following month (21 trading days) than the stocks it did not pick. We score that from -1 (the picks always did worse) to +1 (always did better); 0 means no pattern. This screen scored -0.0004. As a measurement, the score is essentially zero. If the screen had no real edge, a score at least this far from zero would show up about 95 in 100 by luck alone. That does not mean the screen is wrong; it still works for narrowing a list of stocks by your own rules. This is a record of the past, not a prediction.
