Gap-Up Opening is a Technical & Price Action screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 2 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.
A gap-up opening occurs when a stock opens materially above the prior day's closing price, reflecting strong pre-market conviction that accumulated overnight. The catalyst can be a post-market earnings release, a regulatory approval, a management change announcement, a sector development, or simply institutional accumulation on the prior day that carries into the open. Gap-ups are meaningful technical events because they reveal the level at which buyers are willing to transact immediately — above the previous equilibrium price. This screener uses the 3% threshold to filter meaningful gaps from routine daily noise, and includes the gap quality metric (close vs open) to distinguish gap-ups that hold and strengthen intraday from those that fade, with faders often indicating that the gap was driven by retail enthusiasm rather than sustained institutional conviction. All measurements are derived from standard daily OHLCV bars.

Gap-Up % (Open vs Prior Close)
Percentage gap between the current day's opening price and the prior day's closing price, computed as (open_price / prior_close_price - 1) * 100. The qualifier threshold is ≥3%.

Ratio of the current day's closing price to the current day's opening price, computed as close_price / open_price. A value above 1.0 means the stock closed above its open (gap held); below 1.0 means the stock closed below its open (gap faded).

Each month we checked whether the stocks this screen picked did better, over the following month (21 trading days), than the stocks it didn't pick. We score that from -1 (the picks always did worse) to +1 (always did better); 0 means no pattern. This screen scored 0.0053. As a measurement, the score is essentially zero. If the screen had no real edge, a score at least this far from zero would show up about 31 in 100 by luck alone. That does not mean the screen is wrong; it still works for narrowing a list of stocks by your own rules.
