CANSLIM & Growth

Earning Surprise (QoQ EPS Acceleration)

Earning Surprise (QoQ EPS Acceleration) is a CANSLIM & Growth screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 2 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

Sell-side analyst consensus is unavailable in this system — we cannot compute a traditional 'earnings surprise' as reported-minus-estimated. Instead, this screener redefines surprise internally: a company surprises when it reports both strong YoY EPS growth (>25%) AND sequential EPS improvement versus the prior quarter. The logic is that the market tends to project the most recent quarter forward; when the next quarter beats that projection on a sequential basis while also beating the year-ago comparison, it signals that business momentum is building rather than plateauing. This is distinct from CANSLIM C in two important ways: CANSLIM C is purely YoY and does not require sequential acceleration, and CANSLIM C uses a 25% threshold as a minimum pass bar. This screener adds the QoQ dimension, which catches companies emerging from a trough where YoY comparisons are easy but the real question is whether momentum is compounding within the current fiscal year. Sequential acceleration within a strong YoY growth context is a particularly rare and durable signal — it means the tailwind is strengthening, not merely persisting.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Year-over-Year Earnings Growth

  • EPS Growth YoY (Quarter) ≥ 25

Sequential (QoQ) Earnings Acceleration

  • EPS Growth QoQ > 0

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore

What each figure means

EPS YoY Growth Latest Quarter %

(eps_latest_qtr - eps_same_qtr_prior_year) / abs(eps_same_qtr_prior_year) * 100. EPS sourced from FinEdge financials (statement_code=pl, period=quarterly), field: eps. Uses the eps field directly as reported — FinEdge retroactively adjusts EPS for bonus issues and splits across the full 28-quarter history, ensuring the YoY comparison is valid even across corporate action dates.

High is better

EPS QoQ Change (Latest vs Prior Quarter) %

(eps_latest_qtr - eps_prior_qtr) / abs(eps_prior_qtr) * 100. eps_prior_qtr is the quarter immediately preceding eps_latest_qtr (e.g. Q4 FY2025 vs Q3 FY2025). Positive values indicate sequential earnings acceleration; negative values indicate sequential deceleration even if YoY growth remains positive.

High is better

EPS Latest Quarter (₹)

eps field from FinEdge quarterly financials for the latest reported quarter, in ₹ per share. Adjusted for all corporate actions (bonus, splits) retroactively by FinEdge across the full 28-quarter history.

Questions

How is this screen calculated?
Each stock is tested against 2 conditions using figures computed from exchange prices and company filings, adjusted for corporate actions. The rule is versioned; this page shows version 1.0.0.
How often does the screen update?
The figures are recomputed once each trading day after the nightly compute. A stock whose figures are more than three days old is left out rather than shown stale.
