Quality & Compounders

Bluest of the Blue Chips

Bluest of the Blue Chips is a Quality & Compounders screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 3 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

Blue chip stocks are the bedrock of any serious portfolio: large, well-established companies with proven track records of profit growth, high returns on equity, and valuations that reflect quality without being absurdly expensive. They are not going to triple in a year — but they compound steadily, weather downturns better than smaller companies, and provide liquidity when you need it. This screener combines scale (market cap above ₹3,000 crore), growth (profit growing at double digits), quality (ROE above 15%), and a sanity check on valuation (not wildly overpriced relative to earnings).

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Scale

  • Market Cap ≥ 50000

Quality

  • Profitable Years (last 5) ≥ 4
  • Revenue CAGR (5Y) > 10

Valuation

Described in the philosophy; not a pass/fail condition in the current rule

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore

What each figure means

Market Capitalisation (₹ Cr)

Total market value of all outstanding shares, in crores of rupees. Large caps in India are typically above ₹20,000 Cr; this screener requires a minimum of ₹3,000 Cr.

Larger market cap means more analyst coverage, more liquidity, and greater institutional ownership — all of which provide stability. The ₹3,000 Cr floor filters out mid-caps that may have less reliable earnings.

High is better

PAT Growth (3 Years, %)

Compound annual growth in Profit After Tax over the past 3 years. Measures whether the company is consistently expanding its earnings base.

High is better

Return on Equity (%)

Net profit divided by shareholder equity. Measures how efficiently the company creates value from the capital shareholders have entrusted to it.

High is better

Price-to-Earnings (PE) Ratio

Current price divided by trailing 12-month earnings per share. The number of years of current earnings the market is willing to pay.

Low is better

Questions

How is this screen calculated?
Each stock is tested against 3 conditions using figures computed from exchange prices and company filings, adjusted for corporate actions. The rule is versioned; this page shows version 1.0.0.
How often does the screen update?
The figures are recomputed once each trading day after the nightly compute. A stock whose figures are more than three days old is left out rather than shown stale.
